Olfactory Perception in Migrating Salmon I. L-s~iun~, a Salmon Rxpi~.llent in Iv~/~m'malian Skin

The presence of a repellent for migrating coho (Oncorhynckus kisutch) and spring (Oncorkynchus tshawytscha) in the skin of salmon predators has been previously reported (1). The repellent was estimated to be active at a concentration of one part in at least several million parts of water. This is not surprising in view of the known ability of minnows to respond to the presence of a dead member ...

Cortisol and Pacific Salmon: A New Look at the Role of Stress Hormones in Olfaction and Home-stream Migration.

Pacific salmon (genus Oncorhynchus) exhibit an interesting and uncommon life-history pattern that combines semelparity, anadromy, and navigation (homing). During smoltification, young salmon imprint on the chemical composition of their natal stream water (the home-stream olfactory bouquet or "HSOB"); they then migrate to the ocean where they spend a few years feeding prior to migrating back to ...

Attraction of migrating adult sockeye salmon to conspecifics in the absence of natal chemical cues

Directed animal movement, which drives behaviors such as natal philopatry or dispersal, is guided by the input of sensory information. Anadromous salmonids are philopatric (they return to their natal habitat to reproduce), and their upstream movements during the spawning migration are directed by olfactory cues. Two main sources of olfactory cues have been identified—imprinted natal cues and ph...

Olfactory Transcriptional Analysis of Salmon Exposed to Mixtures of Chlorpyrifos and Malathion Reveal Novel Molecular Pathways of Neurobehavioral Injury.

Pacific salmon exposed to sublethal concentrations of organophosphate pesticides (OP) have impaired olfactory function that can lead to loss of behaviors that are essential for survival. These exposures often involve mixtures and can occur at levels below those which inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE). In this study, juvenile Coho salmon were exposed for 24 h to either 0.1, 0.5, or 2.5 ppb chl...

Different olfactory perception in heroin addicts: an fMRI study

Background: Addiction as a mental disorder has large adverse effects on brain health. It alters brain structure and deteriorates brain functionality. Impairment of brain cognition in drug addiction is illustrated in many previous works; however, olfactory perception in addiction and in particular the neuronal mechanisms of it are rarely studied. Methods: In this experiment, we recruited 20 he...
